In 2026
Buckinghamshire has:
- a population of 578,772 (estimated in mid-2024)
- an area of 1,874km2 including major towns such as Aylesbury, High Wycombe and Marlow
- over 500 looked after children
- 142 parish councils
- over 5,500 residents supported through adult social care
- a budget if over £600 million for the financial year
- 236 schools, including pupil referral units and local authority maintained nurseries
- over 60 parks, recreation grounds and public spaces
- maintained 2,200 miles of carriageway
- carried out 32 million waste and recycling collections per year
On the horizon
The Office of National Statistics (ONS) project the population of Buckinghamshire to be 608,934 in 2036.
There are currently 277 state pension age residents per 1,000 working age residents. By 2035, this will rise to 320 state pension age residents per 1,000 working age residents.
The ONS predict that, by 2035 there will be a:
- 49% increase in 85+ year olds*
- 19% increase in 65+ year olds*
- 5% increase in adults (18 to 64)*
- 6% decrease in children (0 to 17)*
*Construction of new dwellings in the county could lead to population changes or increases beyond those currently predicted by the ONS.
