Council Tax discounts, exemptions and disregards
You’ll usually have to pay Council Tax if you’re 18 or over.
We base your Council Tax bill on at least 2 adults living in a home. Spouses and partners who live together are jointly responsible for paying the bill.

If you've made adaptations to your home due to a resident having a disability
If you or someone you live with are severely mentally impaired (SMI)
If the property is an annex occupied by a dependant or elderly relative
Students and apprentices
If you are over 18 and have Child Benefit paid for you
If you are a school or college leaver
If you are an apprentice or youth trainee
Buildings and properties
If the property is a second home
If the property is UK Forces accommodation
If the property is student halls of residence
If the property is a hospital, nursing home, care home or night shelter
Other discounts and exemptions
If you are a member of visiting forces or their dependant
If you are a member of international headquarters or a defence organisation (or their dependant)
If the property is the main residence of a person with diplomatic privilege or immunity
If you are detained in prison or under the Mental Health Act
If you are a foreign language assistant
If you are a member of a religious community
If you are a Buckinghamshire care leaver who is under 21 years of age
If you are a Ukrainian National here under the Homes for Ukraine sponsorship scheme
After you've applied
After you've applied, we will assess your claim and contact you regarding the outcome. You must continue to make payments whilst a discount application is pending.
If your circumstances change
If your circumstances change and you believe that you are no longer eligible for a discount, disregard or exemption, contact us as soon as possible so we can adjust your bill.
