Disabled band reduction

You may be eligible for this reduction if your property has had essential changes or adaptations made to it in order to improve the wellbeing of a disabled person (adult or child) who lives in the property.

Eligibility

The property must meet at least one of the below requirements:

  • a room (other than a bathroom, kitchen, or toilet), which is mainly used by the disabled person (for example a room for storing dialysis equipment or wheelchairs, or ground floor bedroom in a property with 2 or more floors)
  • an additional bathroom or kitchen for the use of the disabled person (the term bathroom means a room, which contains a bath and/or shower unit it does not refer to a toilet and hand basin alone)
  • a disabled person needs to use a wheelchair inside the property

Evidence required

Where possible photographic evidence of adaptations to property and any other relevant proof is required.

We may also ask one of our inspectors to visit your property to confirm the reduction.

After you've applied

After you've applied, we will assess your claim and contact you regarding the outcome.You must continue to make payments whilst a discount application is pending.

If your application is successful, your Council Tax band will be lowered by one band.

If your home is already on the lowest band (Band A), your Council Tax bill will be reduced by 17% instead.
