Council Tax discounts, exemptions and disregards
Overview
You’ll usually have to pay Council Tax if you’re 18 or over.
We base your Council Tax bill on at least 2 adults living in a home. Spouses and partners who live together are jointly responsible for paying the bill.
Select an option on the list below to find out if you're eligible for a discount, exemption or disregard and apply:
If you live alone
Council Tax bills are normally based on at least 2 adults living in a property. If you're the only adult living there, you may qualify for a 25% discount.
If you care for someone or have a disability
You may qualify for money off if you care for someone, have a disability, or live with someone who does.
If you're a student, apprentice or young person
You may be able to get money off if you're a student, apprentice or still receiving Child Benefit until you're 20 years old.
Student discount and exemption
School or college leaver exemption
Apprentice or youth trainee exemption
If the property has special circumstances
Discounts and exemptions may apply depending on how the property is used.
Other discounts and exemptions
You may qualify if you are in one of the following situations:
Members of visiting forces or their dependant
Members of international headquarters or a defence organisation (or their dependant)
Main residence of a person with diplomatic privilege or immunity
People who are detained in prison or under the Mental Health Act
If you're on a low income
If you're on a low income, you may be able to get Council Tax Reduction. This is different from a Council Tax discount or exemption.
After you've applied
After you've applied, we will assess your claim and contact you regarding the outcome. You must continue to make payments whilst a discount application is pending.
If your circumstances change
Contact the Council Tax Team as soon as possible if you're no longer entitled to a discount, exemption or disregard.
