Guide to grammar schools and the Secondary Transfer Test

Last updated: 9 April 2026

Test dates for Secondary Transfer Test

The Secondary Transfer Test dates for children due to move up to secondary school in September 2027 are 8 and 10 September 2026. Children attending Buckinghamshire primary schools and Partner schools will be tested in school on these dates.

Children who attend any other school will sit the tests at a grammar school or another central test venue. For most children this will be on 8 and 10 September. For some children, testing may be slightly later.

If your child is being tested at a grammar school or another central venue, we will email you with a formal test invitation by 7 August. This will include the:

  • dates
  • times
  • venue

Check your junk or spam folders if you're expecting a test invitation but do not receive one by 7 August. If you cannot locate it, contact admissions before the end of August.

You cannot choose a test time, date, or venue: these will be allocated to your child.

'Identification and Fit for Testing' form

If your child goes to a state funded Buckinghamshire primary school or Partner school, you do not need to complete this form; your child’s identity is confirmed by their school.

If your child is taking the tests at a grammar school or another central test venue, we will send you an 'Identification and Fit for Testing' form with your testing invitation.

This form is to enable you to confirm that your child is well on the test date. You should attach a photograph of your child to the form so we can check their identity too.

This form must be completed and you need to bring it to the to the Secondary Transfer Testing session; without this form we will not be able to test your child.

Children living abroad

All testing happens in the UK.

If your child currently lives abroad, but will be moving to the UK, tell us when they will be in the UK and we will arrange for them to be tested.
