Apply for a late transfer grammar school test (12 and 13 plus)

Introduction

Before you apply

Our grammar schools are very popular. Think carefully before you apply for a place. Many children go through the process of preparation, testing, and qualify at testing, but are disappointed when there are no places to offer to them.

For September 2023 entry, no places were offered at for either Year 8 or Year 9 in the first round of allocations in March.

For those who qualify, the qualification remains valid for one year following the test for most of the grammar schools. A child must be qualified before they can be added to a grammar school waiting list.

For the Royal Latin School the qualification gained for year 8 entry remains valid for the academic year. Your child would need to be tested again for year 9 entry, by the school.

For Aylesbury Grammar School, Aylesbury High School and Burnham Grammar School, the qualification remains valid until the end of year 9.

View the admissions policy of your preference grammar schools for more information.

The qualification for all grammar schools in this late transfer process will lapse at the end of year 9, and to be considered qualified after year 9 your child will need to be tested for entry to year 10 by your preference grammar school. For year 10 entry, all grammar schools manage their own application and testing process. Please contact your preference grammar school/s for more details if you wish to make an application for entry to years 10 or 11.

Entry to year 10 or year 11

Applications for entry to year 10 or year 11 must be made directly to your preference grammar school.

When you can register

From 2 October 2023 you can register for testing for entry to:

  • Aylesbury Grammar School
  • Aylesbury High School
  • Beaconsfield High School
  • Burnham Grammar School
  • Chesham Grammar School
  • John Hampden Grammar School
  • The Royal Latin School - Year 8 only
  • Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School

We recommend you to review the admissions policy of your preferred school where details include how long a child's qualification will remain valid for.

For testing for entry into any other Buckinghamshire grammar school, you must refer directly to each school’s website. Do not include any other schools (Buckinghamshire or other local authority areas) as we will not process these.

Consider carefully your grammar school preferences. If you decide to register your child for testing, we encourage you to list your true preferences. Preference changes after the first round of allocations will only be accepted where there has been an evidenced change of circumstance for example a change of home address.
