Buckinghamshire Highways Maintenance Transparency Report

Buckinghamshire Council, as the Highway Authority, is responsible for operating, maintaining and improving the highway network within Buckinghamshire. The highway network is recognised as one of the Council’s most valuable assets, comprising over 3,300 kilometres of road (enough to stretch from Buckinghamshire to Athens, Greece) and tens of thousands of supporting assets. It connects people to homes, jobs, schools, healthcare and local services, helping communities and the economy to thrive every day. We therefore have a duty to keep in well maintained so that it can keep people, goods and services moving safely and efficiently across the county every day.

Buckinghamshire’s network comprises of the following assets:

• Carriageways – 3,382 km
• Footways – 2,511 km
• Cycleways – 359 km
• Lighting (for example streetlights, illuminated signs and lights at pedestrian crossings) - 38,313 Assets
• Structures (for example bridges, culverts and retaining walls) – 652 Assets
• Drainage (Gullies) - 87,036 Assets
• Road Signs (non-illuminated) – 25,793 Assets
• Other Assets - grit bins, bollards, road markings, safety barriers, trees, grass verges and many more

Maintaining Buckinghamshire's highway network is challenging due to its scale, the condition of local roads, and the impacts of severe weather and major infrastructure projects such as High Speed 2 (HS2). Recent winters and periods of extreme heat have accelerated road deterioration, meaning investment and maintenance activities must be carefully prioritised to maintain safety, resilience and network condition.
