Major milestone reached in expansion of The Kingsbrook School
Buckinghamshire Council has celebrated a significant construction milestone in the expansion of The Kingsbrook School in Aylesbury, marking another important step in delivering high-quality education provision for the county’s growing communities.
The Kingsbrook School, which opened in September 2022, is a c.£40 million, 1,080-place secondary school on the Kingsbrook housing development. With future population growth in mind, the school’s original layout was designed to facilitate expansion from six forms of entry up to ten, ensuring it can continue to meet the needs of local families.
The project’s ‘topping out’ ceremony has now taken place, marking the point at which the new building has reached its highest level. This latest phase of development, delivered by contractor Morgan Sindall Construction, represents an investment of approximately £13million which the council will fund through a combination of Section 106 contributions, Basic Need funding, and support from Homes England via the Housing Infrastructure Fund. Construction began in October 2025 and is expected to be completed in November 2026.
This development underlines Buckinghamshire Council’s commitment to providing enough high-quality school places for local children, particularly in areas of significant housing growth such as Kingsbrook, which will eventually see about 2,450 new homes.
Alongside The Kingsbrook School expansion, a second primary school, Orchard View Primary Academy, is also being built on the Kingsbrook development. Both schools incorporate state of the art sustainability features. The completed Kingsbrook School building will have solar panels and will use air source heat pumps to serve all heating and hot water requirements. The only gas provision on the site will be for the science labs and food technology rooms. Orchard View Primary Academy will be the first ‘net zero carbon in operation school’ in Buckinghamshire.
Councillor Carl Jackson, Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, said:
“This is a significant milestone for Buckinghamshire and for everyone involved in delivering this important project. The expansion of The Kingsbrook School is about more than bricks and mortar – it is about ensuring that local children and young people have access to high-quality education close to home and in environments which inspire them to succeed.
As our communities grow, we need to provide new infrastructure to support them. By delivering modern, adaptable and sustainable school buildings, we are ensuring we can meet demand for school places today and for years to come.”
As well as increasing capacity, the development is designed to enhance the learning environment. The school’s science, technology, music, art, food technology and SEND facilities are being expanded in a way which minimises disruption while ensuring the school can continue to offer a broad and enriching curriculum. A large expansion of the cycle racks reflects the high number of pupils who are choosing to cycle to the school.
The project also reflects Buckinghamshire Council’s commitment to building schools which are fit for the future. The new facilities are being delivered using modern construction methods and incorporate energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible design principles, creating spaces which are sustainable and supportive of student wellbeing.
