We are located in the heart of Aylesbury, in the Buckinghamshire Council building. Our entrance is at the side of the council building.

Facilities for visitors

We have 1 public room where customers can study archival original material and local studies resources, for example:

  • maps
  • text books
  • microfilm
  • microfiche
  • transcripts
  • other documents detailing local history

We also offer:

  • computers
  • microfilm and microfiche readers
  • sockets for you to plug in personal devices
  • accessible toilets
  • induction loop systems
  • magnifying equipment

Tell us if you would like to use any of these resources during your visit. We'll book you a specific seat in the room so you can access what you need.

You can use a camera in both our study areas, you will need to buy a permit.

To protect our documents, there are some items we do not allow into the searchroom, including:

  • pens
  • food
  • drinks (including water bottles)

Book an appointment

You can visit the archives without an appointment but we recommend booking an appointment 2 working days in advance to avoid disappointment and waiting times.

To book a session, email us with the dates you would like to visit. We'll reply to confirm your place.

Pre-order documents

You can pre-order certain documents with us up to 2 working days before your planned visit.

You can pre-order up to 6 documents.

You can also order an additional 3 documents (on the day) depending on how busy it is. This may include an additional wait.

There are some documents which might be too large or too fragile for us to produce without advanced notice.

Reader's Tickets

From 1 January 2024 customers visiting the Archives will require a valid Buckinghamshire Library card in order to sign in to our Searchroom.

If you already have a library card then bring it with you for your visit. If you do not already have a valid card then we can issue you with one when you arrive.

To obtain a card you will need to provide proof of your name and current address.

Acceptable proof includes a driving licence, or a combination of items such as a bank card and bill.

You do not need to be a Buckinghamshire resident to obtain a card via the Archives.
