Buckinghamshire Libraries were delighted to welcome England's Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Whitty, to Buckingham Library, where he learned about the impact of the Healthy Libraries Programme and the vital role libraries play in supporting the health and wellbeing of local communities.

During the visit, the Healthy Libraries team and library staff showcased the wide range of health and wellbeing support available through Buckinghamshire Libraries, including Bounce and Rhyme sessions, Starting Reception events for families, the Blood Pressure Monitor Loan Scheme, and the Home Library Service. Discussions also highlighted the vital role libraries play in tackling social isolation and strengthening community connections through groups such as Knit and Natter and Dementia Cafés. These activities demonstrate how libraries support not only literacy and learning, but also mental wellbeing, social connection and community resilience.

The visit was also an opportunity to celebrate the dedication of Buckinghamshire Libraries' staff and volunteers, whose passion and commitment make these services possible every day. Their work ensures that libraries remain at the heart of communities across the county, providing support that extends far beyond traditional library services.

Professor Whitty's visit was a strong endorsement of the impact Buckinghamshire Libraries have on local communities. From reducing isolation to connecting people with local support, libraries continue to make a real difference to residents' lives every day, particularly in smaller towns and rural communities where they serve as vital hubs for information, support and connection.
