Artist in Residence Comes to Buckinghamshire Libraries

Michelle Viveash | Culture and Reading Manager, 03 November 2026 - By Hook By Book

This November, Buckinghamshire Libraries is inviting residents to step into a world of mystery, storytelling and creativity as acclaimed local artist Roxie Turner takes up a unique residency at Princes Risborough Library and Chesham Library.

The residency forms part of By Hook or By Book, Buckinghamshire Libraries' exciting reading and cultural engagement programme funded by The National Lottery Fund. Created as Buckinghamshire Libraries' contribution to the National Year of Reading, the programme aims to inspire people of all ages to discover (or rediscover) the joy of reading for pleasure.

Inspired by the enduring popularity of crime fiction, the most borrowed genre across Buckinghamshire Libraries, By Hook or By Book explores mystery, local heritage, folklore and storytelling through an engaging programme of events, exhibitions, workshops and performances.

Meet the Artist

Local artist Roxie Turner will lead a series of creative drop-in workshops throughout November, inviting library visitors to become detectives, storytellers and artists. The residency will culminate in a special showcase celebrating the artwork created by participants during the project.

Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned sketcher, the workshops have been designed to be welcoming, accessible and creative. Participants are encouraged to attend multiple sessions, developing their skills and building on their ideas across the residency. All materials will be provided.

Uncover the Story Behind the Evidence

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore two intriguing workshop themes:

Trace Exhibit

What can ordinary objects tell us about the people who owned them?

In this self-guided, artist-supported workshop, participants will sketch a collection of fascinating artefacts and props, drawing inspiration from the traces people leave behind. Using carefully curated collections of everyday objects, attendees will create artwork while imagining the stories hidden within these mysterious items.

Composite Witness

Become a sketch artist for the day in this engaging portrait workshop.

Inspired by courtroom sketches, eyewitness accounts and e-fit imagery, participants will develop their drawing skills by creating portraits based on descriptions and visual clues. It's a fun and imaginative challenge that combines observation, creativity and storytelling.

Creating a Community Crime Board

Throughout the residency, artwork created by participants will become part of an evolving community "crime board" displayed within the library. As new clues, sketches and stories are added, the display will grow into a collaborative artwork shaped by the local community.

At the end of the project, contributions will be brought together in a specially produced printed newspaper, giving participants a unique keepsake of their involvement and the creative journey they have shared.

Curious Objects and Hidden Clues

To spark imagination, Roxie Turner has assembled a collection of themed tactile drawing boxes filled with intriguing objects and personal artefacts. These include vintage photographs, medals, postcards, keepsakes, textiles and everyday items connected to different stories and cultures. Participants will use these objects as inspiration for their artwork, helping bring mystery and narrative to life through drawing.

The workshops are free, drop-in sessions and are open to everyone. Whether you're interested in art, fascinated by mysteries, or simply looking for a creative activity to enjoy, there's something for all ages to discover.
