A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is made by a local planning authority to protect specific trees, groups of trees or woodlands.

You usually need permission before carrying out work that could affect a protected tree, including:

• cutting it down
• uprooting it
• lopping or topping it
• wilfully damaging it or destroying it
