Road improvements: Market Place, Chalfont St Peter

Overview

Our Buckinghamshire Highways team and Cadent are making improvements to Market Place in Chalfont St Peter over summer 2026.

The work is split into 3 phases:

  • Phase 1, footway improvements
  • Phase 2, gas pipe upgrades
  • Phase 3, carriageway resurfacing

We're coordinating the works with Cadent to reduce disruption.

Phase 1, footway improvements

Led by Buckinghamshire Highways from 26 May to 26 June.

We're making improvements to the safety and condition of the footways from the High Street Roundabout to outside Bishops House. This is separate from works to the footways by Cadent later in the programme.

We'll manage traffic with:

  • a 24-hour footway closure
  • 24-hour temporary traffic lights
  • a temporary footway in the carriageway for pedestrian access

Phase 2, gas pipe upgrades

Led by Cadent from 27 July to 27 September.

This has been carefully planned during the summer holidays, before the resurfacing. The upgrades will then continue after the resurfacing is finished.

While this project will temporarily affect the area, this proactive approach will enhance the reliability of the gas network. This will keep people safe and warm and reduce the likelihood of unplanned emergency repairs.

Phase 3, carriageway improvements

Led by Buckinghamshire Highways from 10 August.

We're resurfacing the carriageway from the High Street to Gold Hill East (using plane and patch). We're doing this at night to reduce disruption, so the road will be closed from 8pm to 6am.

Why we've scheduled the works into phases

These works have been carefully sequenced into 3 phases to avoid newly completed works being affected by subsequent work.

Due to the condition of the carriageway, resurfacing works are required; however, these must take place after the gas main replacement has been completed to avoid damage to the newly laid surface. All parties have explored whether the programme could be brought forward, but following detailed discussions with Cadent, it has been confirmed that the gas works cannot practically be moved from their current summer dates.

Whilst we appreciate that this is not ideal, it is the only viable option to ensure that all works are carried out safely, in compliance with the relevant requirements, and with the least possible disruption to road users and the wider community.

The gas works require a road closure and have therefore been planned during the school holiday period, when traffic levels are typically lower, to help reduce disruption to road users and the wider community.

In the meantime, Buckinghamshire Highways’ inspectors are carrying out weekly inspections, and targeted interim repairs will be undertaken where necessary to ensure the carriageway remains safe until the permanent repairs take place with the planned resurfacing to be delivered in August.
