Wendover cycleway improvements

Cycleway improvements in Wendover began on 24 January 2022 and was mostly completed in May 2022.

Current progress

Following a successful public consultation and completion of the detail designs for the scheme, construction began on 24 January 2022 and was mostly completed in May 2022. The project will improve the cycling and walking network and help promote sustainable travel in the town.

The work has included a combination of creating new stretches of cycleway, widening and resurfacing existing cycleways and footways and adding markings on roads and cycleway signage. All will combine to make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to get around the town using a cohesive network.

Work has included linking the Amber Way cycleway, which currently goes from Aylesbury to Victory Road in Wendover, to Wendover railway station.

Additionally, there is a new widened cycleway between Halton Lane and Castle Park Road as well as improvements and widening along the existing cycleway between Halton Lane and Worlds End Lane.

A new extension to the Amber Way now connects the cycleway to the schools along Wharf Road.

Objectives

This project aims to:

improve connectivity in Wendover and therefore help promote sustainable travel
encourage cycling for shorter journeys in Wendover through developing the cycling network

Proposed cycleway improvements

With the available budget, these 3 cycleway improvements within Wendover are being completed.

The proposals are:

railway station access – linking the existing Amber Way cycleway along Aylesbury Road to the Railway Station
Amber Way improvements on Aylesbury Road between Halton Lane and Castle Park Road
school access – extending the existing Amber Way cycleway along Aylesbury Road towards the schools along Wharf Road

This proposal links the existing Amber Way cycleway on Aylesbury Road with Wendover Railway Station via Lionel Avenue, Dobbins Lane and Coombe Avenue. It largely consists of on-carriageway markings to ensure that motorists understand that cyclists will be on the carriageway.

From Aylesbury Road cyclists will use the current informal crossing to travel towards Lionel Avenue.

Along Lionel Avenue there will be cycleway markings on the carriageway, along with route signage.

Cyclists will utilise the existing cut through linking to Dobbins Lane, where there will be on-carriageway cycle markings similar to the proposed design along Lionel Avenue

To reach the railway station, cyclists will travel up Coombe Avenue and then need to dismount at the end road and push their bicycle up the steps using a cycle ramp. From the back of the car park people will cycle through the railway station car park to reach the station.

This proposal creates a shared use cycleway on the northern footway along Aylesbury Road between Halton Lane and Castle Park Road, preventing cyclists from having to cross the road onto the southern side, providing a more consistent, attractive and safer route. The shared-use footway / cycleway will be widened to approximately 2.5m.

Cycleway crossings will be constructed at the junctions of Halton Lane, Grenville Avenue and Castle Park Road.

In addition, the existing shared use cycleway between Worlds End Lane and Halton Lane will also be resurfaced and widened.

This proposal extends the Amber Way cycleway from Victory Road to link to the schools along Wharf Road.

The footway between Victory Road and Wharf Road will be upgraded to a shared use footway / cycleway. The path will be widened near the Health Centre to become approximately 2.5m wide.

At the Wharf Road junction, cyclists will then have to re-join the carriageway. There will be cycleway markings on the carriageway, along with route signage to let road users know that cyclists are likely to be using Wharf Road.

Funding

We have a budget of approximately £500,000 to spend on cycleway improvements, which is funded by HS2 Ltd.

Consultation

The Wendover Cycleway improvements consultation began on 1 March 2021 and ended on 28 March 2021.

The project team hosted the consultation through the project webpage and Your Voice Bucks. Roughly 1,000 leaflets were distributed to nearby properties to inform them about the consultation as well as social and mainstream media.

The project team have identified common queries, comments, and issues that were raised during the consultation process. These are grouped into themes and responses are set out within our Consultation Response Document PDF, 226KB.
