Bernwood Jubilee Way walking and cycling routes

The historic Bernwood Jubilee Way is a 61 mile walking and cycling route which circles the former Royal Hunting Forest of Henry II, established circa 1228.

The trail, which runs through 31 parishes, is a beautiful path through woods, meadows and wild flower fields, with magnificent views and rare native flora and fauna as well as butterflies, birds and wildlife.

HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations are centred on sustainability and leaving a legacy for future generations, with projects such as the Queen’s Green Canopy.

In 2001, in honour of Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee, the trail was created by the former county council, and now 21 years later it is in need of further care for the next generations to enjoy.

Buckinghamshire Council would like to work with the 31 parishes through which the trail runs to engage with local residents, especially farmers and landowners along the route, to encourage the planting of native trees and hedges (where appropriate for the local environment) which support local biodiversity and native wildlife and to update the signage along the route.

We would like each Parish to discuss how they and their community can enhance the route, encouraging people to access it, to walk it and to live and breathe the trail, for casual walking, serious walking, cycling (135 miles of existing routes including the National Cycle Routes 50 and 51) and horse riding. For all age groups to enjoy the nature, to learn about our local biodiversity and to stimulate economic benefits through travel and tourism.

The Bernwood Jubilee Way has the potential to engage with audiences nationally and regionally and to generate opportunities such as tourism, hospitality, and trekking and cycling shops.

We have partnered with Buckingham New University to work with marketing students to explore opportunities for promoting the trail.

This is a huge opportunity for people to explore the Buckinghamshire countryside and to share in its beauty.

Do you own or maintain areas around the Bernwood Jubliee Way? Trees are available from the Woodland Trust, if they are planted in 2022 to 2023 they will count towards the Queen’s Green Canopy.

Some of the signs and information boards would benefit from replacement. If you are a businesses and able to sponsor signage improvements along the route email [email protected].

Volunteer groups could take responsibility for cutting back overgrowth and maintaining the trail.

This is an opportunity to get creative and decide how you want to look after the trail in your parish. Are there local history or photography groups who could produce information or signage about the trail? How would local people like to make the most of the trail?
