Renew a disabled person's bus pass

Use this service to renew a bus pass to travel for free if you:

are permanently disabled
have a disability that lasts at least 12 months (or likely to last at least 12 months)

Before you renew

You'll need to renew your bus pass every 5 years. You can renew your bus pass from 90 days before it expires.

Do not apply for a new disabled bus pass if your current pass is expiring.

To renew your existing pass, email us your photo and supporting documents.

Evidence required

We ask that you email us one item from each of the following (select the category to see examples of what we accept):

You will need to send in one of the following pieces of evidence to show that you're eligible for a disabled bus pass:

Proof that you receive the Higher Rate of the Care or Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (HRMCDLA)

This could be in the form of an award letter from the Department of Work and Pensions.

This cannot be Attendance Allowance. We'll need to see the date until which the higher rate of care or mobility has been awarded.

The following do not make you eligible for a disabled person's bus pass:

Attendance Allowance
the lower rate of the care or mobility component of DLA

Proof of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) (specific points needed)

To be eligible for a bus pass due to receiving PIP, you must either show evidence of either:

at least 8 points under the 'moving around' activity of the mobility component of PIP
at least 8 points for the 'Communicating verbally' activity
at least 12 points for 'planning and following a journey'

You must email us both:

a copy of the scoring sheet for PIP
the front page showing the:
- date
- recipient’s name
- the date until which the award is valid

Certificate of Vision Impairment (CVI)

A Certificate of Vision Impairment (CVI), formerly known as a 'BD8', signed by a Consultant Ophthalmologist stating that the applicant is severely or partially sight impaired.

Evidence confirming deafness in both ears

Evidence confirming applicant is profoundly or severely deaf in both ears.

Letter about not driving on medical grounds

This can be either:

a recent letter from the DVLA, stating that you have had your driving licence either refused or revoked on medical grounds
a recent letter from your hospital consultant or NHS healthcare professional stating your condition would be refused a driving licence by the DVLA and how long they expect this condition to last (however, depending on your condition, we may ask you to get a letter of refusal from the DVLA to confirm this anyway)
