Help us shape the future of Chesham
Residents in Chesham are being invited to help shape the future of their community by taking part in a consultation on proposed updates to local Conservation Area boundaries.
Buckinghamshire Council has launched a public consultation and is encouraging residents, businesses and community groups to share their views on proposals to recognise, protect and enhance the places that make Chesham special. The proposals support the council's ambition to create thriving places where people are proud to live, helping to ensure the town's character and heritage continue to be valued as it grows and evolves.
Conservation Areas celebrate and preserve the features that make towns and villages distinctive, from historic buildings to valued green spaces. They help make sure change is carefully managed, so communities can continue to develop while keeping the distinctive character that residents value.
Buckinghamshire Council regularly reviews Conservation Areas to make sure they continue to reflect the places that matter most to local people. The proposed updates will ensure Conservation Area boundaries accurately recognise valued local heritage, green spaces and landmarks, helping to safeguard them for future generations while supporting well-planned growth that respects the character of the area.
In Chesham, proposals include extending the Conservation Area to include Lowndes Park, a much-loved public green space with significant historic interest, along with Thomas Harding School, Meades Water Garden and Waterside.
The review represents an important opportunity, as Chesham's Conservation Area was last reviewed in 1987. Updating the appraisal will help ensure the character, heritage and features that residents value today are properly recognised and considered as the town continues to evolve.
Peter Strachan, Buckinghamshire Council's Cabinet Member for Planning, said:
"The character of our towns and villages is one of Buckinghamshire's greatest strengths and something residents consistently tell us they value.
"Conservation Areas help protect the features that make places distinctive, whether that's historic buildings, valued green spaces, important views or the overall feel of an area. By keeping these appraisals up to date, we can help ensure any future changes protect and enhance the unique character and history of Chesham.
"This is also about making sure local people have a real say in how their communities develop in the years ahead. The views we receive will help shape decisions that protect local heritage, support thriving places and ensure Buckinghamshire remains a great place to live, work and visit.
"Local people know their communities best, so I'd encourage anyone with an interest in their area to take part and tell us what matters most to them."
The consultation supports Buckinghamshire Council's priorities to create great places, protect what matters most to local communities, and ensure residents have a say in how their towns and villages evolve in the years ahead.
A programme of drop-in engagement events, including daytime and evening sessions, will give people the opportunity to learn more about the proposals, ask questions and share their feedback before completing the online consultation:
- Chesham Town Hall: 4 November 12:30pm to 2pm and 5 November 5:30pm to 7pm.
