Offer to share your home with a refugee

Finance and costs

Monthly payment

You will receive between £350 and £500 as a 'Thank you' payment at the end of each month; dependant on how long your guest has been in the UK.

'Thank you' payments will be paid for the period of time you are hosting. Your Liaison Officer will ask for your bank details for the payment, which will be paid monthly in arrears.

Mortgage, insurance and council tax

Check with your mortgage provider

If you have a mortgage, you will need to check with your lender to find out if you will be able to take in a refugee before applying. Lenders have committed to enable as many borrowers as possible to participate in the scheme.

Check with your insurance provider

You will need to check with your insurance provider about whether they’ve got any policies that may affect your cover.

It’s important to think about any possible implications for your insurance before your guest(s) arrive in the UK.

No affect on Council Tax

There is no discount on your Council Tax associated with the scheme.

If you are in receipt of the single person discount this will not be impacted.

Entitlements for your guest(s)

You cannot charge rent to your guest(s).

You do not need to provide meals for your guest(s), however you can do so if you would like to.

Refugees will be able to apply for benefits and seek employment. Your Liaison Officer will provide assistance to do this.
