More Than Books: Libraries at the Heart of Community Wellbeing

Carol Castellanos, 06 May 2026 - Healthy Libraries

Libraries are more than places to borrow books — they are trusted community spaces that support wellbeing through connection, learning, and access to support.

Supporting Health and Wellbeing in Buckinghamshire

Buckinghamshire Libraries are committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of residents across the county. As trusted community spaces, libraries play an important role in helping people access information, connect with others, and find support. Through our partnership with Public Health, the Healthy Libraries Programme brings this work together under a clear and coordinated approach that reflects the needs of our communities. Together, we are helping to create healthier, more connected communities across Buckinghamshire.

What the Healthy Libraries Programme offers

Through the Healthy Libraries Programme, Buckinghamshire Libraries offer a wide range of initiatives designed to support both physical and mental wellbeing. These include book groups and shared reading sessions to help reduce loneliness, digital support to enable access to online health resources, and signposting to local services for those who may need additional support. Libraries also host health-focused events, provide access to reliable health information, and create welcoming spaces where people feel safe, included, and connected.

Working in Partnership

Partnership working is at the heart of the Healthy Libraries Programme. By collaborating closely with Public Health and local organisations, libraries are able to respond to the specific needs of their communities. This includes working with health professionals, community groups, and voluntary sector partners to deliver targeted support, share trusted information, and reach those who may benefit most from these services.

A New Blog Series

We are delighted to introduce this new blog series, which will explore how libraries across Buckinghamshire are supporting health and wellbeing in meaningful and practical ways. Throughout the series, we’ll highlight initiatives, partnerships, and real-life stories that demonstrate the positive impact libraries have at the heart of their communities. From reducing loneliness to improving access to trusted information and support, we invite you to discover how libraries are helping to create healthier, more connected communities — and how this work continues to grow.
