Buckinghamshire Libraries launches By Hook or By Book thanks to National Lottery funding
We're delighted to announce that Buckinghamshire Libraries has been awarded £47,000 from The National Lottery Fund to deliver By Hook or By Book, an exciting new reading and cultural engagement programme inspired by the world of mystery.
Building on the fact that crime fiction is the most borrowed genre in our libraries, both locally and nationally, By Hook or By Book will use the popularity of mysteries and detective stories as a gateway to reading, storytelling, local heritage, folklore and cultural discovery.
At a time when reading for pleasure is in decline, this project aims to reignite a love of reading by making it social, creative and immersive. We know that reading can have a powerful impact on wellbeing, literacy and community connection, and through this programme we want to help people of all ages rediscover the joy of books.
Over the coming months, libraries across Buckinghamshire, including our prison libraries, will host a wide range of activities and experiences centred around the theme of mystery. The programme will include writer and artist residencies, immersive theatre performances, family events, archive workshops, exhibitions, reading challenges and festival activities designed to inspire curiosity and creativity.
The project also supports the National Year of Reading and will feature a touring British Library exhibition exploring the life and work of one of the world's most celebrated mystery writers, Agatha Christie.
Whether you're a lifelong reader, a budding detective, a family looking for something different to do, or someone who hasn't picked up a book in years, By Hook or By Book will offer plenty of opportunities to get involved.
