Request a new salt bin
You can request a new salt bin for use on a public road or pavement. Requests are subject to site approval and payment.
Salt bins are filled before and during the winter season, as priorities allow, with a 50:50 mix of salt and sharp sand.
Before you apply
We only accept applications from March to August. Approved salt bins are usually installed between September and November.
Salt bins are for use on public roads and pavements only.
The person or organisation making the request is responsible for funding the salt bin.
Fees
A new salt bin, including installation and the first refill, costs £450.
Future restocking may be available at a cost of £100 per refill.

You need an email address to use FixMyStreet.
Installation
Approved salt bins are normally installed between September and November, although we cannot provide an exact installation date.
Once installed, the salt bin will appear as an individual asset on the FixMyStreet map.
Where we will consider new salt bins
We will consider requests for new salt bins at known trouble spots on the public highway.
Funding for new salt bins elsewhere must be provided by the person, group or organisation making the request.
We can also supply salt bins to organisations that have links to the council, including:
- social care properties
- education settings
- Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service
Once installed outside the public highway, Buckinghamshire Council has no future liability for these salt bins beyond the limits of the public highway.
New housing estates
Salt bin requirements for new housing estates will be assessed individually.
Developers must apply and pay for any salt bins required on new housing estates.
Salt heaps
We do not provide roadside salt heaps and do not replenish them. Saline runoff may harm the local environment.
