Toolkit: reducing food waste at home

Last updated: 30 January 2023

Introduction

Wasting food costs householders. Estimates show the average family of 4 could save £60 per month by reducing food waste.

Food waste also has a negative impact on the planet. If food waste were a country, it would be the third biggest carbon emitter in the world after the USA and China.

Buckinghamshire homes produce at least 30,000 tonnes of food waste every year, enough to fill 250,000 wheelie bins. A staggering two thirds of that food waste is edible.

Buckinghamshire Council spends hundreds of thousands of pounds each year disposing of food waste that could have been eaten or recycled.
