Mow time like the present

Buckinghamshire Highways, 26 June 2025 - Road repairs and improvements , Cycleways and footways

With all the sunshine we’ve had lately, grass across Buckinghamshire is growing fast. That’s why our highways grass cutting programme kicked off back on 1 April—and it’s now in full swing.

Keeping roads safe

There are three grass cuts in towns and villages planned for this year, with the focus for rural areas being on maintaining visibility at junctions and bends. This helps keep our roads safe for everyone. Resident reports about overgrown grass that affect visibility are invaluable—if you spot an issue, please report this on FixMyStreet. Your feedback helps us act quickly where needed.

No Mow May: A Pollinator-Friendly Initiative

Ever heard of No Mow May? It’s a fantastic initiative that encourages people to let grass and wildflowers grow during May to support pollinators like bees and butterflies. Why? Because thriving wildflowers provide essential nectar and habitats for these vital creatures. By mowing less, we’re giving nature a much-needed helping hand. It’s a simple yet impactful way to boost biodiversity in your own garden or green spaces.

Whilst we still tackle grass where there is a potential safety issue during May, such as around junctions, our general approach is to not cut verges, which allows growth of wildflowers and supports pollinators.

Cultivation Licences: Planting with Purpose

Thinking about planting wildflowers, shrubs, or grass on council-managed land or public highways? You’ll need a Cultivation Licence. This ensures we know where planting has taken place so our crews can take care when cutting. The process is straightforward, and you can apply online for a cultivation licence. This licence is your green light to contribute to the beauty and biodiversity of Buckinghamshire while staying in line with local guidelines.

Get Involved

Whether it’s reporting visibility concerns or planting with a cultivation licence, there are many ways you can help us keep Buckinghamshire safe and beautiful this summer. Together, we can maintain road safety while championing biodiversity across the county because there really is Mow time like the present!
