How the compost is made

Garden waste is collected from households and our recycling centres and taken to composting facilities in:

  • Buckinghamshire
  • Bedfordshire
  • Hertfordshire
  • Oxfordshire

Buckinghamshire Community Compost itself comes from a composting facility in Sutton Courtenay. Garden waste is given to them from various local sources, with 1,000 tonnes coming from Buckinghamshire.

The garden waste is shredded, piled into large compost heaps, turned regularly and reaches over 50°C.

The whole process can take as little as 8 weeks.
