Apply for consent to work on a listed building

When consent is required

The interior and exterior of a listed building are protected by legislation.

This means that you will need listed building consent for work that involves:

  • carrying out major repairs
  • internal and external alterations (such as removal of partition walls, fireplaces, new flues and vents)
  • extensions
  • demolitions
  • introducing new materials to the property (such as insulation)
  • changing materials (for example changing from metal pipes to plastic pipes)
  • notable changes of colour to the exterior (walls, doors or windows)
  • adding solar panels to the building or curtilage

For more information, view Historic England's advice on work that may require consent.
