Marlow Bridge - Latest update
Marlow Bridge is an iconic Grade 1 listed structure, built in 1832, spanning the River Thames between Marlow and Bisham. Over time it has suffered from wear and tear, with the last major works completed between 1965 and 1966.
During Summer 2025, Buckinghamshire Council started an extensive programme of structural restoration to Marlow Bridge. These works are important to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge for the future and to ensure it continues to be safe for all users. Progress Update
As we move towards the main phase of structural works, a working compound is now in place within Pound Lane Car Park. This area provides essential storage, welfare facilities, and workspaces close to the bridge.
Over the festive period, works will pause, and we will return as much space as possible in the Car Park and along the High Street for those visiting Marlow during the festive period. Works will restart on 5 January 2026, when full parking suspensions will be reinstated.
Excavations have started on both the north and south side of the bridge to start building the temporary works to allow us to lift the bridge. These are due to continue into January 2026.
We continue to work with Thames Water, SSEN and other providers to keep services running throughout these works.
January 2026 and beyond lookahead
Key activities in January 2026, including related closures, are:
- 5 January to 10 January 2026:
- we will be closing the bridge from 8pm to 6am each night to all vehicles and pedestrians. This is so that we can safely install vital monitoring equipment on the bridge to monitor its behaviour when being lifted/lowered over the coming months.
- diversions will be in place for traffic over the A404.
- Throughout January 2026
- outside of the nighttime closures mentioned above, vehicles and pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge.
- the remainder of monitoring equipment will be installed from either below the bridge, or by closing one footpath at a time to keep the need for full closures to a minimum.
- we are working with SSEN to accommodate their utility updates within our closures to minimise impact on residents.
- we will be installing the new lighting feeder pillars as part of the street lighting remedial works for the bridge.
- Mid-February
- weather dependant, we will be looking to do our first lift of the bridge in February over a weekend closure. We will provide further detail in the new year.
Parking
The works do require parking bays to be suspended in and around the site. Parking bays along the High Street (opposite the George & Dragon public house) and Causeway have been suspended to facilitate the works. No vehicles are allowed to park in the area including disabled/blue badge users without dispensation from Parking Services.
To help facilitate the construction works and manage access, we will continue to implement additional traffic management restrictions and enforcement to deter parking.
