Marlow Bridge - Latest update

Buckinghamshire Highways, 20 August 2025 - Public realm improvements

Marlow Bridge is an iconic Grade 1 listed structure, built in 1832, spanning the River Thames between Marlow and Bisham. Over time it has suffered from wear and tear, with the last major works completed between 1965 and 1966.

During Summer 2025, Buckinghamshire Council started an extensive programme of structural restoration to Marlow Bridge. These works are important to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge for the future and to ensure it continues to be safe for all users. Progress Update

Ground investigations are fully underway with the south side of the bridge complete and the north side of the bridge set to finish in the next couple of weeks. These works have been done in collaboration with Marlow Canoe Club and Marlow Rowing Club, who have facilitated temporary relocations to allow works.

We are currently working closely with the Environment Agency (EA) to secure permission for the underside painting on the north side of the bridge. This will protect the key structural parts of the bridge from the elements for years to come.

We have been working with the Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to coordinate works on their utility services crossing the bridge alongside the underside works. We have also finalised the design for the relocation of the lighting feeder pillars which will take place in the coming weeks.

Two week look-ahead

  • Ground investigations will conclude in the coming weeks. These findings will support the development of the temporary works design, to allow the bearings to be installed.
  • Approval from the EA to allow underside painting to take place on the north side of the bridge is due within the next two weeks.
  • Baseline monitoring for the bridge, ahead of construction, will take place from the end of the month and continue for a couple of weeks. Minor disruption is expected whilst monitoring equipment is installed.
  • We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders, including utility providers as part of progressing the temporary and permanent design works to allow structural works to progress.

Parking

The works do require parking bays to be suspended in and around the site. Parking bays along the High Street (opposite the George & Dragon public house) and Causeway have been suspended to facilitate the works. No vehicles are allowed to park in the area including disabled/blue badge users without dispensation from Parking Services. To help facilitate the construction works and manage access, we will continue to implement additional traffic management restrictions and enforcement to deter parking.
