Marlow Bridge - Latest update

Marlow Bridge is an iconic Grade 1 listed structure, built in 1832, spanning the River Thames between Marlow and Bisham. Over time it has suffered from wear and tear, with the last major works completed between 1965 and 1966.
During Summer 2025, Buckinghamshire Council started an extensive programme of structural restoration to Marlow Bridge. These works are important to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge for the future and to ensure it continues to be safe for all users. Progress Update
Monitoring of the bridge has been completed, for now; this will set a movement baseline for the bridge ahead of it being lifted off the existing bearings.
The Environment Agency (EA) Permit relating to the painting of the bridge has now been received. We have erected scaffolding and commenced preparation, including spray blasting and the application of a zinc-epoxy resin primer, in advance of the painting works. The painting works will protect key structural parts of the bridge from the elements for years to come.
We continue to work closely with utility companies and are in the final stages of the temporary works design, using the recent ground investigation information.
We continue to work closely with the EA to finalise the bearing replacement works. We anticipate receiving the next permit in the coming weeks to allow enabling works for lifting the bridge to begin in November.

Two week look-ahead
- Painting will be ongoing and subject to weather, will be completed by the end of October.
- We are working with Marlow Rowing Club to facilitate the temporary relocation of their boats to allow works to progress on the South side of the bridge.
- We look forward to receiving the approval permit from the EA to allow enabling works for lifting the bridge to begin.
- We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders, including utility providers as part of progressing the temporary and permanent design works to allow structural works to progress.
Parking
The works do require parking bays to be suspended in and around the site. Parking bays along the High Street (opposite the George & Dragon public house) and Causeway have been suspended to facilitate the works. No vehicles are allowed to park in the area including disabled/blue badge users without dispensation from Parking Services. To help facilitate the construction works and manage access, we will continue to implement additional traffic management restrictions and enforcement to deter parking.
