Marlow Bridge - Latest update

Buckinghamshire Highways, 17 July 2025 - Public realm improvements

Marlow Bridge is an iconic Grade 1 listed structure, built in 1832, spanning the River Thames between Marlow and Bisham. Over time it has suffered from wear and tear, with the last major works completed between 1965 and 1966.

During Summer 2025, the Council started an extensive programme of structural restoration to Marlow Bridge. These works are important to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge for the future and to ensure it continues to be safe for all users. Major maintenance works: Marlow Bridge | Buckinghamshire Council

Progress Update

The council has worked closely with key stakeholders over the past few months to progress the project, including enabling works. Supported by the council, the Marlow Canoe Club has moved to a new location within the Marlow Sport Club and temporary storage facilities for the Canoe Club have been provided to allow works to take place.

This allowed the council’s specialist demolition contractors, Colemans, to commence works on 8 July 2025. Demolition and site clearance on the northern side of the Bridge was completed on 16 July 2025.

Two week look-ahead

  • As the demolition activities are now complete, Haris fencing will be installed to secure the northern underside of the Bridge. This will allow the next stage of the enabling works to continue.
  • These enabling works include, further technical investigations and assessments, which are due to take place over the coming weeks, in advance of the main works.
  • These investigations include monitoring vibration of the bridge deck and further targeted ground investigations, at both the northern and southern end of the Bridge.
  • We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders, including the Rowing Club, who are due to relocate part of their racking temporarily, to allow works to progress on the Southern side of the Bridge.

Parking

The works do require parking bays to be suspended in and around the site. Parking bays along the High Street (opposite the George & Dragon public house) and Causeway have been suspended to facilitate the works. No vehicles are allowed to park in the area including disabled/blue badge users without dispensation from Parking Services. To help facilitate the construction works and manage access, we will continue to implement additional traffic management restrictions and enforcement to deter parking.
