Private hire and Hackney Carriage driver licence extension

If your previous licence was not issued for the full 3 years due to your limited right to work status (often referred to as a Visa), you can submit a Licence Extension application.

You can extend a driver licence for up to the end of a 3-year period.

Only make an application to extend your licence

  • If your current driver licence has not expired. If your licence has expired, you must make a new application here
  • If your licence was not originally granted for the full 3 years due to a limited Right to Work. If the Home Office has advised, you of your newly extended Right to Work/Leave to remain period
  • if the Home Office are still considering your Right to Work/leave to remain and your previous licence is due to expire
  • if you have been sent evidence of your new status such as Indefinite Leave to Remain

Types of licence extension

  • 6-month extension – This is normally given when you are waiting for the Home Office to determine a new Right to Work

Or

  • The remainder of the 3-year term due, since the original grant date

We cannot grant extensions that exceed 3 years from the initial grant date. The extension period you are granted will depend on your individual circumstances and the evidence you are able to provide.

Biometric resident permit

If you have a biometric resident permit, you will be required to provide a Right to Work share code in addition to the permit.

Non-UK passport

If you hold an old-style paper Vignette sticker in your non-UK passport or have no official documentation to prove your settlement in the UK, you are encouraged to apply for a Biometric Resident Permit.

You can do this by making a free No-Time limit application with the Home Office, if granted you will be given a biometric resident permit which will allow you to obtain a share code.

Further information about this can be found on the Gov UK website.

Timeframes

We recommend that you submit your extension application in good time ahead of the expiry of your licence, to allow the authority sufficient time to carry out the necessary checks with the Home Office.

If your application with the Home Office is still pending, and you do not have the required evidence, you can still submit your application and we will complete a Status Verification Enquiry Check with the Home Office to obtain your new Right to Work status.
