Renew a disabled person's bus pass
Use this service to renew a bus pass to travel for free if you:
- are permanently disabled
- have a disability that lasts at least 12 months (or likely to last at least 12 months)
You'll need to renew your bus pass every 5 years.
You can renew your bus pass from 90 days before it expires.
Evidence required
We ask that you email us one item from each of the following (select the category to see examples of what we accept):
The photo must be of the pass holder and taken within the last month.
We are not able to copy images from passports or driving licences.
It can be taken at home, professionally or in a photo booth but it must be passport-style.
This means that your photo must:
- include your head, shoulders and upper body
- be clear and in focus
- be in colour
- be unaltered by computer software
- be taken against a plain, light-coloured background

You will need to send one of the following for the passholder:
- valid passport (if using a non-EU passport you will also need to send right to remain documents)
- valid photocard driving licence
- identity card for foreign nationals
- birth or adoption certificate
- marriage, civil partnership, divorce or dissolution certificate
- HM Forces ID card
We do not accept any other form of ID – this includes:
- an expired passport
- a counterpart driving licence
You will need to send one of the following showing the passholders' name and address:
- Council Tax bill for the current year (you can download a copy if you have created an online account)
- valid photocard driving licence (if not already used as proof of ID)
- utility bill dated within the last 3 months
- bank statement dated within the last 3 months
- benefit award letter from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) within the last 12 months
- award letter from the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency dated within the last 12 months
- housing (or other) benefit award letter dated within the last 12 months
- pensions letter from the pensions service dated within the last 12 months
We do not accept any other forms of proof of address.
You will need to send in one of the following pieces of evidence to show that you're eligible for a disabled bus pass:
Proof that you receive the Higher Rate of the Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (HRMCDLA)
This could be in the form of an award letter from the Department of Work and Pensions.
We will need to see the date until which the Higher Rate of Mobility has been awarded.
The following do not make you eligible for a disabled person's bus pass:
- Attendance Allowance
- the lower rate of the mobility component of DLA
- the care component of DLA
Proof of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) (specific points needed)
To be eligible for a bus pass due to receiving PIP, you must either show evidence of:
- 8 points or more under the 'moving around' activity of the mobility component
- at least 8 points for the 'Communicating verbally' activity
- a score of at least 12 points for 'planning and following a journey' as well as either an up to date Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or a Social Worker recommendation letter)
You must email us both:
- a copy of the scoring sheet for PIP
- the front page showing the date and the recipient’s name and the date until which the award is valid
Certificate of Vision Impairment (CVI)
A Certificate of Vision Impairment (CVI), formerly known as a 'BD8', signed by a Consultant Ophthalmologist stating that the applicant is severely or partially sight impaired.
Evidence confirming deafness in both ears
Evidence confirming applicant is profoundly or severely deaf in both ears.
Letter about not driving on medical grounds
This can be either:
- a recent letter from the DVLA, stating that you have had your driving licence either refused or revoked on medical grounds
- a recent letter from your hospital consultant or NHS healthcare professional stating your condition would be refused a driving licence by the DVLA and how long they expect this condition to last (however, depending on your condition, we may ask you to get a letter of refusal from the DVLA to confirm this anyway)
