Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Buckinghamshire Council

How we are intending to use AI, or Artificial Intelligence, at Buckinghamshire Council.

What is AI?

AI is a form of computer technology that can perform tasks such as:

  • analysis
  • problem-solving
  • decision-making

Some of the newer forms of AI are also able to generate documents, images, and audio files.

Using AI in everyday life

AI is already being used in many ways in our daily lives, from virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, to personalised recommendations on streaming services. In local government, AI can be used to improve services as a productivity tool.

How we are testing AI

We are currently working with Microsoft to pilot the deployment of their new AI tool - Copilot. This can be used in tandem with Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel and Power Point to:

  • draft and summarise documents
  • analyse data
  • streamline administrative tasks

We have rolled a number of licences out across the council to explore the potential of AI to improve the way we work.

We are also working with all or our suppliers to understand the AI tools that might become available and where these can improve our efficiency and productivity.

Who will be making decisions

We want to reassure you that at the end of every decision, there will still be a human making it. AI is a tool that can help us make better decisions, but it is not a replacement for human judgment and expertise.

Keeping your personal data safe

The protection of your personal data is of utmost importance to us, and we have strict measures in place to ensure its security.

As we learn more and deploy AI on our systems, we will keep you informed.
