Community art brings new life to Birdcage Walk underpass in High Wycombe

The Birdcage Walk pedestrian underpass near Wycombe Railway Station has been transformed with vibrant new public art, thanks to a community-led initiative supported by Network Rail and Buckinghamshire Council. It marks the final piece in a series of public artworks delivered through Opportunity Bucks — a flagship, multi-agency programme aimed at improving opportunities and quality of life for people across Buckinghamshire.

This epic mural features iconic imagery of Wycombe, emblematic arts from the area, and local flora and fauna, all inspired by feedback from residents who attended community outreach events. These were held in spring 2025 at High Wycombe Library, The Front Room Café, and Wycombe Arts Centre, and resulted in over a hundred contributions and suggestions that were incorporated into the design.

Hand-painted by friends of Wycombe Arts Centre with help from the Community Payback team, this collaborative approach has resulted in a stunning, colourful community mural that reflects positive and creative aspects about High Wycombe.

In addition to the artwork, Network Rail have been actively clearing litter and overgrown vegetation from nearby embankments and railway lines, while local volunteers have helped tidy up Birdcage Walk itself.

Steve Bowles, Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said:

“We are thrilled to see the transformation of Birdcage Walk underpass through this wonderful community art project – led by award-winning Bucks artist Dan 'Decreate' Wilson with assistance from Teakster, whom we thank warmly for their incredible work.

"This initiative not only beautifies the town but also fosters a sense of pride and connection among residents. It’s a testament to the creativity and dedication of our local artists and volunteers.”

Fraser Pithie, Community Manager for Network Rail’s Central route, added:

“It’s been incredibly rewarding to work alongside our railway neighbours in High Wycombe. Through collaboration with local people and organisations, and with the leadership of Buckinghamshire Council, we’ve seen a real transformation at Birdcage Walk.

“This project is a shining example of how community engagement can lead to meaningful improvements in our shared spaces.”
