Buckinghamshire Council congratulates former Leader on New Year Honour

Buckinghamshire Council’s Leader and Chairman have congratulated former Leader Councillor Martin Tett who has today been recognised in the New Year Honours List for his exceptional contribution to political and public service.

Councillor Tett is a serving Buckinghamshire Council councillor for Chalfont St Giles and Little Chalfont. He stepped down as Leader of the Council in May 2025 after 14 years in the role and has been awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in this year’s Honours list.

During his time as Leader of Buckinghamshire Council and previously Buckinghamshire County Council, Martin guided Buckinghamshire through unprecedented change and challenge. His leadership was instrumental in the successful creation of the unitary council during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing together five legacy councils to deliver more efficient, responsive, and community-focused services.

Throughout his tenure, Martin championed initiatives that strengthened community cohesion and improved residents’ lives. From spearheading Opportunity Bucks, a programme aimed at tackling inequality and driving economic growth, to mitigating the environmental impact of HS2 and supporting Afghan and Ukrainian families seeking refuge, Martin’s commitment to Buckinghamshire has been unwavering.

His influence extended beyond the county, shaping national policy through roles such as Chair of the LGA Environment, Economy, Housing and Transport Board, spokesperson for adult social care in the County Council Network, and co-founder of England’s Economic Heartland.

Commenting on his award, Martin Tett, said:

“It is unexpected and amazing to be recognised by His Majesty for public service. For me it has been an honour to represent the wonderful people of Buckinghamshire and, in particular, Little Chalfont for over 20 years.”

Steven Broadbent, Leader of Buckinghamshire Council, commented:

"Martin’s impact on the national stage has been pivotal. His leadership and advocacy have ensured that Buckinghamshire and places like it are fully represented in shaping local government policy.

“His roles in the county council’s network while serving as Buckinghamshire Council Leader also meant he was an important and influential voice when representing and advocating for the local government sector as a whole. Martin has always typified what an excellent local politician should do; represent their community, their area and local politics as a whole. He has always done this to great effect including in his current role as a serving ward councillor, sacrificing much personal time and energy in his public service.

“There is so much he has done that is commendable and Martin should, rightly, be very proud. He continues to serve our residents for the benefit of all.”

Buckinghamshire Council Chairman Sarfaraz Khan Raja added:

"Martin never lost sight of the importance of true local representation. As a ward member, he is deeply engaged with residents, listening to concerns and acting decisively to improve lives on a local and county-wide level.

“His empathy and dedication to community issues from tackling fly-tipping to supporting vulnerable families reflect a leader who truly cares about the people he serves.”
