Buckinghamshire Council Chief Executive to stand down

Buckinghamshire Council has today announced that its Chief Executive, Rachael Shimmin OBE, will be leaving the organisation later this year to take up a new opportunity. The Council has expressed its gratitude to Rachael Shimmin for her strong leadership and contribution to the county over the last nine years.

Rachael first came to Buckinghamshire as Chief Executive of Buckinghamshire County Council in 2016. She then played a key role in leading the unitarisation of five legacy councils to form Buckinghamshire Council in 2020, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. She has served as Chief Executive of the new council since its establishment.

Rachael Shimmin, said:

“Buckinghamshire Council is a remarkable organisation, driven by dedicated staff and a strong commitment to its communities. Leading such a talented team has been a privilege, and I remain immensely proud of the progress we have achieved, often in the face of significant challenges.

From our Covid response to major investments in initiatives like Opportunity Bucks, the council has consistently delivered for residents. I am confident it will continue to thrive and realise its ambitious plans for the future.”

Cllr Steven Broadbent, Leader of Buckinghamshire Council, said:

“Rachael has been pivotal in steering Buckinghamshire Council through some of the most transformative years in the county’s history. Her unwavering commitment to public service and visionary approach during what have been exceptionally challenging times for the sector have strengthened how we deliver for Buckinghamshire’s communities and will leave a lasting legacy.

“On behalf of Members and staff, I extend our heartfelt thanks to Rachael for her dedication and wish her every success in the future.

“As we begin the process to recruit her successor, the Council remains in a strong position to continue driving progress and innovation, ensuring delivery of services and outcomes that meet the needs of our residents.”

The Council will appoint an Interim Chief Executive in the coming weeks while starting the process of recruiting for a permanent Chief Executive to ensure continuity and stability during this period of change.
