Armed Forces Day: Celebrating our Armed Forces community

At the start of Armed Forces Week (22 to 28 June), Buckinghamshire Council joins the collective thank you across the country to all those in the Armed Forces, for everything that they do to protect our country and people.

Today (Monday 23 June) Buckinghamshire Council’s Chairman, Cllr Sarfaraz Khan Raja, led two flag-raising ceremonies to mark the official start of the commemorations leading up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday 28 June. The ceremonies took place at Old Crown Court in Aylesbury, and outside the council offices on Queen Victoria Road in High Wycombe. Representatives from the Armed Forces were present.

To continue the focus on the Armed Forces community, Reserves Day will take place on Wednesday 25 June.

Armed Forces Day is a national event which provides the opportunity for people to give a show of thanks and appreciation for the work of our Armed Forces, past, present and future. This includes those currently serving, veterans, cadets and reservists.

Speaking after the flag raising events, Chairman Sarfaraz Khan Raja said: “Today’s ceremonies mark the beginning of a week dedicated to honouring the incredible commitment of our Armed Forces – especially those who serve and reside here in Buckinghamshire. We deeply value their service and sacrifice.”

Buckinghamshire Council has pledged to directly support the local Armed Forces community through its Armed Forces Covenant. The covenant is a formal document which sets out how the council and partner organisations in the county will provide assistance to Armed Forces families in Buckinghamshire. The pledge covers a range of areas including healthcare, education and housing as well as transition, employment and social isolation.

Chairman Sarfaraz Khan Raja added: “Buckinghamshire’s proud military heritage, including our RAF bases in High Wycombe and Halton, reminds us of the vital role our Armed Forces play. This week is a chance to pause and recognise the dedication and sacrifices of those who serve and have served.”

“As a community, it’s our duty to stand by our Armed Forces families – offering them the support, respect and care they deserve in return for all they do for us.”
