Thomas Harding Junior School flood management project
The project was setup to reduce the flood risk at Thomas Harding Junior School. The school is at risk from both surface water flooding and fluvial (river) flooding.
The project was delivered on our behalf by Meristem.
Location
Thomas Harding Junior School (THJS) is in Pednormead End, Chesham.
What we improved
We installed Property Flood Resilience (PFR) measures as part of the Pednormead End Project.
We also secured funding from the Department for Education (DfE) to retrofit Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) planters at the school. This funding also required us to include education into the project.
We installed 10 SuDS planters at the base of downpipes to store roof run-off before slowly releasing the water into the drainage network. This prevents the sewer from becoming overwhelmed during rainfall events. The planters also improve biodiversity and water quality. Some of the planters also have seating for students.
What we're doing next
We're going to add information boards near the planters to explain what they do and their benefits.
