Amazing Roman busts found at Stoke Mandeville

The Archaeology team, 02 August 2022 - Recent archaeological finds

Come and see them at Discover Bucks Museum in Aylesbury.

Archaeological excavations in Stoke Mandeville made the news last year. The works were completed in advance of HS2 construction. Archaeologists made the amazing discovery of a probable Roman mausoleum beneath the remains of St Mary’s Church.

Stone busts of 3 individuals and many rare artefacts were recovered after the Norman church floor was removed. Comparisons were drawn with well know sites such as Lullingstone in Kent or Bancroft in Milton Keynes. This site is clearly one of real significance.

The on-site excavations are now over. The analysis of all the artefacts excavated, and the reports about the excavations, have carried on behind the scenes. These post-excavation works can take many years. Often the artefacts remain behind closed doors until all the analysis is complete.
