Neighbourhood Watch signs

Signs Highways will approve

We approve the signs, if the following are met:

  • the sign has been approved by Thames Valley Police (TVP)
  • the number of signs are kept to a minimum
  • the signs are between 2.1 and 3.6 m above ground level. 
  • the upkeep of the signs is made by the Neighbourhood Watch group
  • all signs have third party liability insurance (contact TVP for information)

To request permission from Highways, raise a report through FixMyStreet. Enter the postcode where the sign is required and select 'Road and street signs' as the category.

Where you can put signs

Signs may be put up on:

  • electricity or telegraphs poles (with written permission of the owner)
  • posts supporting village nameplates (where height conditions do not apply)
  • private land where the signs can be put on posts, walls and fencing with the owner’s permission

Where not to put signs

Signs must not be erected on:

  • any traffic sign
  • traffic signal poles or posts

We will remove signs and charge for person responsible for the costs of removal, if the process is not followed.

You'll need to send to the planning department a:

  • copy of the email from Highways
  • copy of the application form

If we or Thames Valley Police (TVP) refuse or the scheme stops, the signs must be taken down within 14 days.
