Transport modelling

Transport model assessments

As part of the development process, we assess our transport models to make sure they’re fit for purpose. The results of this assessment provide us with 2 main reports.

Local Model Validation Reports (LMVR)

An LMVR shows how a transport model we have created matches up to real-world observations of traffic near a proposed transport scheme.

The reports highlight the data used to develop the model in line with the latest government and scheme appraisal guidance.

Forecast reports

A forecast report provides assessment of likely impacts on the transport network at future points in time, based on outputs from a particular transport model.

Impacts include:

  • travel journey patterns
  • costs of travel
  • proposal-specific impacts on traffic flows
  • journey times between the 2 time periods

This requires the development of a:

  • base year, generally the current year of model development
  • future year, generally after the building of the scheme

To be in a position to make the case for national funding, there is a need to provide detailed evidence on travel demand.

This complements government guidance such as the Department for Transport (DfT) Transport Analysis Guidance (TAG) and Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB).
