Parish Pond Survey

About the pond survey

If you are interested in ponds and wildlife, we would love you to take part in the Parish Pond Survey. The pond survey includes landowners, volunteers and the charity Pond Conservation. It gathers details on the locations of as many ponds in Buckinghamshire as possible. Volunteers record what ponds are like and what lives in them.

Why we need to know about ponds

Research shows ponds support more species than other freshwater habitats such as rivers. Some of the species living in ponds are rare, so it is important that we look them.

Locally and nationally, we know surprisingly little about ponds. Any information gathered improves local knowledge and contributes to records held in the National Pond Database. The project will help people make decisions on managing, creating and restoring ponds.

How you can help

Its easy to do a pond survey. You do not need to wade into the pond or have any special skills. You could do the survey next time you are out walking, in the garden or working on your farm. Visit the Freshwater Habitats Trust website and download a pack. The pack includes a guide and survey form. Once you have gathered the information, send it to Pond Conservation.
