Local Economic Strategy
Economic growth is a top government priority, with a long-term plan to support businesses and create a stronger economy. As part of this, the National Industrial Strategy sets out a 10-year vision to give businesses the confidence and stability they need to invest and grow.
Our local plans are aligned with this national approach.
Our Buckinghamshire Economic Growth Plan supports important sectors where we already have strong foundations and exciting opportunities, such as:
- advanced manufacturing
- defence
- life sciences
- the creative industries
This plan is shaped by the Buckinghamshire Growth Board and builds on the ambitions set out in the Bucks Strategic Vision for 2050. It’s a practical roadmap to help us grow our local economy in a way that benefits everyone—by:
- creating good jobs
- supporting local businesses
- making Buckinghamshire an even better place to live and work
Buckinghamshire Economic Strategy: Delivering Prosperity for All
Why this strategy matters
Buckinghamshire’s new Economic Growth Plan 2035 sets out a bold and exciting vision for the future. It’s about helping businesses grow, creating opportunities for local people and making our towns and communities even better places to live and work. It aims to help businesses succeed, encourage new ideas and make sure everyone benefits, whether they live, work or invest here.
The plan was created by the Buckinghamshire Growth Board, which includes the council, business leaders, health and education partners.
Together, we’re working to open up new opportunities and remove the obstacles that hold people and businesses back.
Ten ways this strategy will benefit Buckinghamshire
- More good jobs: The strategy supports fast-growing industries like film and TV, space tech, and life sciences — bringing more high-quality jobs to Buckinghamshire and helping people build rewarding careers close to home.
- Support for local businesses: Small and medium-sized businesses will get more help to grow and innovate, with better access to funding, advice and local networks. This means stronger local economies and more resilient high streets.
- Skills for the future: By investing in education and training, the plan helps people of all ages gain the skills they need to succeed — whether they’re just starting out or looking to retrain.
- Thriving town centres: Towns like Aylesbury, High Wycombe and Chesham will benefit from regeneration, with improved public spaces, transport links and places to live, work and shop — making them more vibrant and welcoming.
- Better infrastructure: From faster broadband to better roads and rail connections, the strategy includes major upgrades that will help businesses connect and communities thrive.
- Greener growth: The plan supports sustainable development, with a focus on clean energy, green spaces and low-carbon transport — helping Buckinghamshire become a cleaner, healthier place to live.
- Innovation and opportunity: Buckinghamshire will be a hub for new ideas and technologies, with support for research, development and testing. This means more opportunities for businesses to grow and for people to be part of exciting new industries.
- Inclusive and fair: The strategy is designed to make sure everyone benefits — with a focus on reducing inequalities, supporting rural areas, and making sure opportunities are open to all.
- Stronger partnerships: Local councils, businesses, health and education partners are working together like never before — making smarter decisions and delivering better results for everyone.
