Buckinghamshire Archaeology Society Prize 2025
On 4 October at the Bucks Local History Network Conference, the Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society (BAS) presented the 2025 bi-annual Archaeology Prize. The BAS Prize is open to any individual, local societies, public bodies and commercial organisations who have done or supported archaeological or historical work within the old county boundary of Buckinghamshire.
The prize was first awarded in 2022 and you can read about the winners from the inaugural award on our earlier blog post Buckinghamshire Archaeology Society Joan Elding Prize 2022 | Buckinghamshire Council
As has often been the case, there were many worthy nominations in 2025, but the Heritage and Archaeology Team were delighted to discover that the winner was the Local Heritage List project. The Buckinghamshire Local Heritage List Team was deemed worthy of the award for the project’s outstanding contribution to recognising and protecting historic buildings and sites valued by local communities across the county. The project has already locally listed over 2,300 assets, with more to come and the project has seen a number of sites added to the list taken forward for national designation, such as Fleet Marston Roman Town, which has been designated as a Scheduled Monument (see A New Scheduled Monument and Listed Buildings for Buckinghamshire! | Buckinghamshire Council) and the Waddesdon Butchers which was designated a Grade II Listed Building in 2024.
The panel who awarded the prize wished to emphasise the high level of public and volunteer engagement, and felt that the volunteer input really raised the worthiness of this project and resulted in it being awarded the 2025 award.
The award was accepted by Lisa Harvey (Local Heritage List Project Officer), Julia Wise (Historic Environment Record Officer), Mike Farley (Volunteer panel member for archaeological sites) and Claire de Carle (Volunteer panel member for Parks and Gardens).
