Confirm your registered voting details

Each year the council’s Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) must conduct an annual canvass of all households to check that the information on the electoral register is up to date.

It is a legal requirement to confirm details relating to your property. If you do not respond to the annual canvass you may be unable to vote in elections. You may also have difficulty in getting credit for mortgages, credit cards and mobile phones, as the register is often used to carry out credit checks.

You can confirm your details or make changes in a variety of ways:

Online

Text

Text ‘NO CHANGE’ followed by both parts of your security code (see form/email) to 80212.

Phone

Call 0800 197 9871

If you inform us that new electors are living at the property, we will send each person a letter or email (Invitation to Register) asking them to also register to vote. They can also do this online at GOV.UK: Register to Vote.

If you consider that you may be at risk of harm because your name is shown on the electoral register, you can register to vote anonymously through The Electoral Commision.

If you wish to register in this way, please also contact the relevant Electoral Services area office using the details above or by phone using the following numbers:

Appearing on the electoral register

If you are not registered to vote, it may take time to appear on the electoral register.

From January to September updates to the electoral register are published each month. But between October and December, monthly updates do not happen because the annual canvass is being carried out. If you apply to register to vote after the September update your details will not be published until 1 December.

Applying for credit during the annual canvass

If you are applying for credit during the annual canvass and your electoral register status is not up to date on your credit report, lenders can still check other information such as where your credit accounts are held. If you require written confirmation of your registration to vote, please contact us.

The electoral register and the 'open register'

There are two versions of the electoral register: the full register and the open register. The full register is used for:

  • electoral purposes
  • detecting crime
  • calling people up for jury service
  • checking credit applications.

The open register is the version that’s available to anyone who wants to buy a copy, including businesses and charities checking name and address details, direct marketing (junk mail) and online directory firms.

Your details will be included in the open register unless you opt out.

Opt out of the open register

The easiest way to opt out of the open register is by contacting the relevant Electoral Services area office.

You can opt out of the open register but cannot opt out on behalf of another person.
