Guidance on the self-build and custom house building register

The government wants to help more people to build or commission their own homes.

Buckinghamshire Council is required by the Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 to maintain a register of everyone interested in buying a plot of land in order to self or custom build their own home.

We have a duty to 'have regard' to this register in our planning, housing and regeneration functions and when disposing of any of our land in accordance with the Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015.

The purpose of the register is to give us an idea of the level of interest for self and custom build in Buckinghamshire. There is no requirement for us to match permissioned land to anyone on the register.

Please be aware that:

  • In Aylesbury Vale our register has 2 sections – Part 1 and Part 2, and there is a £25 admin fee
  • In Chiltern and South Bucks our register has 2 sections, but no admin fee
  • In Wycombe there is only 1 part to the register, and no admin fee
