Dog owner's responsibilities
We may fine or prosecute people who fail to clean up after their dog where this is witnessed by our dog wardens or sufficient evidence is supplied by a member of the public.
Dog walkers are responsible for looking after the animal in their control and must ensure they take bags out with them when walking.
Dog waste should be disposed of in a bin and not tied to hedgerows, trees, or placed on top of a bin that's already full.
We can issue fixed penalty fines of £50. If you are prosecuted in court for allowing your dog to foul in a public place and you fail to clean it up straight away, the maximum fine is £1000.
The following behaviour is against the law:
- failure to pick up and dispose of your dog’s mess from any designated public space
- not putting or keeping a dog on a lead when directed to do so by an authorised officer in any public space
People who are registered blind are exempt from the dog fouling order.
