Looking after someone else's child (private fostering)

Most parents and private foster carers are not aware that they have to notify their local authority of any arrangements made. This makes it difficult for us to check if the children are being looked after properly.

Many professionals including teachers, doctors, health visitors, nurses, religious leaders and nursery staff have regular contact with children and may find out about such arrangements.

We are asking you to inform us of any arrangements you become aware of and to remind parents and carers of their legal responsibility to inform us.

Professionals, parents and private foster carers should inform us preferably in advance of any arrangements being made or as soon as they are told of this requirement.

Help us raise awareness of what private fostering is by:

• printing and displaying our private fostering poster on your staff noticeboards
• mentioning private fostering in your staff meetings
• handing out leaflets (email us to request hard copies of our private fostering leaflets)

There can be lots of reasons why a child doesn’t live at home and their parent has arranged for someone else to care for them.

It’s often the best option for them, we just need to know so we can support everyone and make sure the child is safe and being well looked after.
